Who was the first woman in space

The first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova. She is also the first civilian to fly into space and is still regarded as a hero today. She was able to do this because she was selected from more than four hundred applicants and five finalists to pilot Vostok 6 on June 16th 1963.
