Europeans didn't really care about the countries or the people and only wanted to exploit the land and the workforce. That's why millions suffered and often the Africans were second class citizens in their own countries. That's why many countries had nationalism rise in the form of either military leaders who fought the Europeans or in the form of peaceful leaders who wanted politics to ensure equality.
