John Tyler was the 10th president of the United States. But he was not elected president. When president William Henry Harrison died in 1841, his vice president John Tyler declared himself president.
As president, John Tyler encouraged settlement of the territories that were located in the west and add Texas to the union.
Although he was not a popular president, he made important contributions to the country.
