Germany had to pay heavy war reparations, 132 billion gold marks or some US$ 269 billion today. The victors, the Allied nations, blamed Germany for the war and included a "guilty clause" in the accord, so they wanted Germany to pay the price. Demilitarized areas and limitations on the German armed forces and their weapon systems were also imposed. All of this created deep disatisfaction because it was absolutely unfair to the Germans. They felt humilliated. Those obligations also added to the large economic troubles at home.
