Eleanor Roosevelt had resigned from DAR because of the treatment that they did to Marian Anderson. Moreover this association did not favor black people and did discrimination. So resignation from showed that she stood for equality.

In 1939, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) refused permission for Anderson to sing to an integrated audience in their Constitution Hall. At the time, Washington, D. C., was a segregated city and black patrons were upset that they had to sit at the back of Constitution Hall.

Eleanor Roosevelt resigned from her membership of the DAR in protest at their treatment of Anderson. Roosevelt and the Marian Anderson Committee arranged for the singer to give her concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, with the Mall of Washington as her auditorium.
