How did the ottoman empire rule the people they conquered?

They were free to believe in their own religion and were generally peaceful as long as they cooperated

Ottoman Empire had a policy and that policy was to tolerate other peoples religion, thoughts and opininons that lived in Ottoman Empire. When the sultan conquered Istanbul he didint burn down any houses and didnt force people to convert to Islam. There was tolerance, peace, compromise through out the nation.
