The 1918 influenza outbreak was devastating global epidemic in human lifetime because within one year, it killed 40 to 100 million people. It destructed children, the elderly, many young and healthy adults, even animals like dogs and cats.

In the Western hemisphere, on 4th March, 1918, the infection was first observed at Fort Riley (Kansas), however by the fall of 1917 at least fourteen army bases had a first incident occurred. While the first case was observed in Brest on 22nd August, 1918. The Spanish flu was termed because the pandemic in Spain obtained more exposure from the media than in the rest of Europe.
