Describe the split in the Muslim community caused by Muhammad's death.

The Sunni and Shia disagreed about who should lead them after Muhammad's death. The Shia thought it should be a direct descendant of Muhammad, but the Sunni thought that a person who met all specified requirements and was a good leader should take over.
