North Korea is a country in eastern Asia. It is located in the northern half of the Korean Peninsula. It borders South Korea to the south, China to the north and Russia to the northeast. Its capital is Pyongyang, which is the largest city in population and area. There are two rivers on the border with China: the Amnok and the Tumen. The country has nuclear weapons and has ended its peace negotiations with South Korea and the US. The United States and China have agreed new sanctions to punish North Korea for developing far-reaching missiles, and for their recent nuclear tests.

The cornerstone of their doctrine is the political discourse of Juche. North Korea lost a close and powerful friend when the Soviet Union was dismantled in 1991, despite having strong ties with China. In addition the country suffered from several natural disasters and experienced a severe famine between 1994 and 1998; between 240,000 to 1,000,000 people are thought to have died.
