The isolationist stand of the United States was because more attention was needed to address the domestic issues. The destruction of man and resources during the First World War raised eyebrows over the intention of supporting a foreign war. The economic lump during the great depression was another reason.

However the change in the neutral stand can be best explained by the ideological stand, they needed the democratic and capitalist notions to strive because it suits them more than authoritative governments of the axis power.
