The Portuguese Empire was the first to engage in the slave trade for the New World in the 16th century and others soon followed. The owners of slave ships considered slaves as a cargo that should be transported to America as quickly and cheaply as possible, to then be sold for slave labor in coffee, tobacco, cocoa, sugar and cotton fields in the gold mines and silver, rice fields, construction industry, wood cutting and as domestic servants.
