The U. S. did not want to invade Japan because they:

did not have means to transport soldiers from the U. S. to Japan.

wanted to focus on the war in Europe.

feared it would lead to a significant loss of life for U. S. military personnel.

did not think they could win a battle on Japanese soil.

    I believe it was the third option if I recall. Because the American military didn't want to have any unnecessary casualties occur.
