The treaty of Kanagawa was signed on March 31, 1854, and Japan opened its ports and stopped being an isolated nation. This is an example of American expansion not because they gained territory but because they gained influence and new trade deals. The United States grew in power as a result of the Kanagawa treaty and that is why it is an example of expansion.
