In addition to producing articles of high commercial value, it had a population of approximately 400 million, representing a huge consumer market.

    Imperialism in Africa determined the division of the continent among the European powers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. For several centuries the continent was exploited by foreign settlers and to this day suffers the consequences of the interventions of yore.
