Appeasement policy is a policy based on resolving conflicts by peaceful and compromising means rather than resorting to war.

This concept of appeasement is normally associated with the figure of Neville Chamberlain.

However, to fully understand the position of the British Conservative leader it is necessary to go back to the Treaty of Versailles (1919). Many, especially among what many Britons thought, because they considered that Germany had been mistreated at the Paris Conference.

The exorbitant war reparations or the unjust application of the principle of nationalities in Austria, Danzig or the Sudetenland, made many prone to a revision of the Treaty.

Added to all of the above was the keen desire to avoid again the horrors of the Great War and the awareness of the relative decline of a British power that had to face multiple challenges throughout the planet.
