The manufacturing in the United States in the early 19th century is directly connected to the Industrial Revolution happening in Great Britain and in some parts of Europe.

Industrialization in Great Britain started in textile manufacturing. British did not want their technology and mechanical know-how to reach other countries since this would undermine these other nations' need for finished goods. Despite British policy that prohibited mechanics' emigration, one skilled British mechanic, Samuel Slater, came to the United States and was responsible for the implantation and growth of textile manufacturing here in the early 19th century.
