a) The almost continuous growth during this period of industrial production definitely eclipsed the predominant specific weight that agriculture still had in most national economies. Thus, and whenever its degree of evolution allowed it, numerous countries responded to this challenge with the realization of their own industrial revolution. Other less prepared countries reacted with the formation of a commercialized agrarian economy, destined to supply food and raw materials to the new industrial nations, leaving secondly their own industrialization. In short, the process of setting up a world-wide economy was characterized during these years not only by the changes that were taking place in the economic structure of many countries, but also by the role that each region was acquiring in the whole of the same.

b) The second half of the nineteenth century, in 1877, saw the transition from "informal" imperialism that exercised control through military influence and economic domination to that of direct domination. Attempts to mediate imperial competition, such as the Berlin Conference (1884-1885) between the British Empire, the Third French Republic and the German Empire, could not definitively establish the claims of each of the powers involved. These disputes over Africa were among the main factors that originated World War I.
