Amanda is an American who just started working for a Spanish company at its office in Madrid, Spain. On her third day at work, she is appalled to hear her boss explain to a colleague why he would never promote a woman to the level of vice president. Amanda knows that in the United States this kind of discrimination is barred by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Does this statute apply to Amanda's Spanish employer in Spain?

    Civil rights Act of of 1964 was one of the most important rights laws. This act outlawed discrimination, protected the voting rights of minorities and women and ended racial segregation. The civil rights bill was passed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on July 2nd, 1964. Before the civil rights act came into existence the blacks were discriminated in southern states and there were Jim Crows laws which allowed a direct attack on black Americans. The act outlawed the discrimination of employment based on race, color, religion national origin and sex, so Amanda could have relied on the statute if she was in the US. But since she is working abroad she would not able to rely on the statute there, she can rely on similar laws of the country where she is working.
