    Answer and Explanation:

Prior to the American Revolution, the American colonists were well aware that the English Revolution (period of the English Civil Wars) occurred because parliamentarian John Hampden inspired people against paying ship tax which King Charles (former King of England, Scotland, and King of Ireland) requested for, without approval from the British parliament.

Inspired by the English Revolution, and equipped with knowledge of how English laws and parliament work, the American colonists (who were actually Englishmen) in the thirteen colonies believed that, because they didn't have any direct representation in the British Parliament, it was illegal according to the Bill of Rights (1689), for the parliament to pass laws (such as the Sugar Act and Stamp Act) on colonists and ask request that they pay tax.
