How were the geography and events in the European and Pacific theaters of World War II similar? How were they different?

The war theaters of Europe and the Pacific are very different. Though there were important naval operations in the Mediterranean, the Baltic and in the Artic region, the war in Europe was mainly a land war. The bulk of most relevant operations to defeat Germany took place in the continental area of Europe, both in the East and the West.

The Pacific War was mainly fought in the sea by the United States and Japan. The strategy of the USA was to progressively capture islands (island-hopping strategy) to get and encircle Japan. However, there were important land operations in Southeast Asia and in China. The Sino-Japanese War, part of WWII, was a land conflict mainly. The Burma Campaign to build a supply road from Burma to China is also worth mentioning.
