Three reasons why cities grew so rapidly:

Industrialization: this is without a doubt the main reason why cities grew so rapidly druing those years. The Industrial Revolution began in the cities of Northern England, and later expanded to other urban areas in Western Europe and the United States. Industries located in cities because they needed a large labor force in a small area. Internal Immigration: people migrated from the countryside to urban areas to find jobs in the industries that were being established. The living conditions became hard, overcrowding and disease were common, as was poverty, but these problems did not prevent people from migrating. External immigration: this applies for the United States. People continue to immigrate from Europe, and many of them stayed in urban areas. This would continue until the first decades of the 20 century, with over 20 million arrivals from Europe.
