The creation of the Northwest Ordinance had a strong impact in the country. This document established the precedent by which the Federal government would expand westward. It also outlined how the admission of new states was going to take place. The Ordinance was also useful in setting legislative precedent when it came to the country's public domain lands. Finally, the Ordinance had the effect of establishing the Ohio River as the geographical divide between slave states and free states.
