Gadsden's Purchase provided the land necessary for a southern transcontinental railroad and ventured to solve disputes that lingered after the Mexican-American War. Gadsden had become the president of the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company in 1839.

He was concerned that the increasing railroad construction in the North was moving trade in lumber, farm and production goods from the traditional north-south route based on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to an east-west axis that would bypass the South. Gadsden joined with Santa Anna on September 25, 1853, in Mexico City to review the terms of the treaty.
