The rise of electronically mass distributed music occurred in Europe with the existence of the Nazi rule. Germany the radio ownership from 4 to 16 million households. Only at this time sound was introduced to movies and the music was very popular. With the war brewing through the 1940s the first patriotic song sung in the U. S. WAS "God bless America" written by Irving Berlin. In the 1940's the U. S. department encouraged the mutual exchange of music on the radio through the neutral countries of Latin America to support President Franklin Roosevelt's Good neighbor policy and Pan Americanism. The efforts in the U. K. and U. S. meant they could count on popular music that established the same war aims.
