Racism in the United States has always been a significant issue that has been addressed over the years, often supported by others and with significant consequences for American society. For nearly a century, laws called Jim Crow laws were developed that deprived blacks of civil rights and segregated African Americans in public places.

They were enacted in 1876 and lasted until 1965 under the slogan "separate but equal. These laws separated social benefits based on ethnicity or skin color, and they were mainly applied in public spaces such as schools, health care, restaurants, parks, transportation, and even the military.

These laws were named after a character called Jim Crow, who was a very famous fictional character played by a white actor who painted his face black and made satires and jokes against people of color, from there the name of this character began to be applied to refer to all the laws that discriminated against blacks.

These laws began as legislative regulations prohibiting black people from exercising their right to vote, and over time, this situation of discrimination by law to access the right to vote ended up imposing a culture of segregation, even in cases where there was no specific law imposing it.

Throughout the years of its existence there were stories of rebellion against the law, organizations of people of color, much racial discrimination and social problems. It came to an end with the passage of two federal laws, first, in 1964, the Civil Rights Act and, a year later, the Voting Rights Act. These two laws, along with earlier Supreme Court rulings ended the discrimination and racial segregation that existed by law throughout the country.
