Answer: The attacks on Pearl Harbor
Explanation: On December 7th, 1941, a force of Japanese fighter planes and bombers with the intent of crippling America's naval force attacked Pearl Harbor, the location of most of the US's naval fleet at the time. Though we were not at war with each other at the time, the Japanese believed that it would only be a matter of time before the U. S joined the war and that it would be best if Japan had the superior Naval Fleet in the pacific. During the attack, the Japanese sunk 5 battleships and destroyed 188 aircraft while damaging a lot of other air and naval craft. What caused America to declare war was the 2335 Americans killed during the attack. A famous phrase said by President Roosevelt after the attacks was "A Day That Will Live in Infamy". On December 8th, 1941, The United States of America Declared war on Japan and in December 11th, 1941, declared war on Germany.

The USA entered the war after the surprise Japanese attack on the Navy facilities at Pearl Harbor, Haiwaii, occurred on December 7, 1941. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt asked Congress to hold a special session and Congress declared war on the Japanese Empire. This is the direct reason for the USA to join Allies in WWII. However, it was expected that sooner or later the US would enter the conflict on the Allied side against the Axis Powers; though formally neutral, the American government had been providing weapons and supplies to Great Britain.
