In Robert Louis Stevenson's story "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", the protagonist Dr. Jekyll and his alter ego Mr. Hyde are in conflict with each other. This united identity yet conflicting natures make it complicated for the good doctor to suppress his monstrous alter ego that he decided to commit sui cide before he does more harm as Mr. Hyde.

In the chapter "Incident of Dr. Lanyon", we find that the doctor has started keeping himself aloof from others, even from his "inseparable friends". Then follows the strange and almost normal absence of the doctor not only from the others but even within his own house. He had decided to lock himself in the cabinet, refusing to see or meet anyone.
