Although he was offered the position of Secretary of State in 1789, which is part of the Executive Branch, Jay never served as one because he declined the offer, but he then was offered to be the first Chief Justice of the United States, which is the highest-ranking position of the Judicial Branch, and he accepted it. In this position, he served from 1789 to 1795.
