Answer: French revolution is frequently considered as an initiation of modernity in European politics. In a way it directly influenced politics in western hemisphere as well (North and South America). It is important not only because of overthrowing traditional absolute monarchy, but also for its concepts of human and civil rights, constitutionalism and republicanism. French revolution initiated first wave of nationalism (so called leftist nationalism) in which nations were encouraged to free themselves from monarchs and dynasties. It contributed significantly to fight agains slavery as well.
Explanation: French revolution should be viewed as not only French but European phenomenon because it made part of much bigger wave of various smaller and not so visible revolutions (see historian Jacques Godechot). In spite of counter-revolutionary resistance in all Europe, its influence was readily received in many countries of Europe and in overseas.
