    The reforms started and accomplished by the governments of the Meiji Era led to a rapid modernization and industrialization in Japan.

    Japan studied the best solutions of the West and adopted them, adjusting them to its own needs and circumstances. The reforms were comprehensive: education, public administration, urban policies, agriculture, the military. etc. By the end of the 19th century, Japan had turned into an industrialized nation and was soon to launch into imperialist expansion: the first move was the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95 in which it defeated China and took Taiwan from the Chinese empire.
