    They believed that their property was being taken from them

    Explanation:

    In the constitution you have the ability to maintain and keep your own property and the southerners viewed their slaves as their property and the government taking their slaves was the same to them as the government taking their land. And eventually the slaves counted towards their votes in the presidential and congressional elections. The elimination of slavery was a very negative idea for them for these reasons.
