But one cannot ignore the fact that one-third of the American population was somehow related to European origin and therefore reaction was obvious. Moreover, while each side wanted good trade relations with the U. S, it was ultimately Allies country who won U. S support because of submarine attacks of Germany took a heavy toll on American lives. Secondly, Zimmerman telegram left no alternative to Wilson and he asked Congress to declare war on Germany.
