Taliban rose to power in 1994 after the end of the Soviet-Afghan War and Civil War in Afghanistan. Between 1996 and 2001 they controlled almost three-quarters of Pakistan and imposed their rule on the strict interpretation of Sharia according to which harsh punishment was imposed for petty crimes and female education is forbidden.
