20. Where did industrialization spread to after Britain? Explain.

The Industrial Revolution started in England in the late 18th century and it further developed in the 19th century. It spread first to Europe and then to North America. In the US, the origins of the industrial revolution are in the last decade of the 18th century; in 1793, an Englishman called Samuel Slater opened a textile mill in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. However, industrialization really took off in the nineteenth century, with the North being more industrial than the South, whose economy remained mainly agrarian. By the end of the century, the US was a fully industrialized country with a rising urban population and modern cities.

In continental Europe, industrialization took place in the 19th century, but the pace varies from country to country. The second industrialized country of Europe was Belgium with an economy based on coal, textiles and iron. It adopted the British model. By mid-19th century, France established itselt as the second industrial power. Germany became another major industrial power in the second half of the 19th century.
