Why did railroad construction expand so rapidly after the civil war

One reason is that the South needed railroad lines to improve its economy. Very few lines had been built in the South prior to the Civil War. The West was being settled and the expansion of the railroad encouraged people (the Homestead Act) to go west and also encouraged the growth of business.

because the war had ended and they had time to do it
