Opposition to Reconstruction resulted from the distaste many southerners had for tax increases that were needed to fund public schools and other improvements, and also because many white southerners could not accept black Americans voting, holding office, and enjoying equality before the law.

    The period following the American Civil war was called the reconstruction era, in which there were major political, social, and cultural turnouts. The African Americans were given constitutional citizenship rights which have turned the former slaves into active citizens. However, the South has perceived the situation differently. The increased taxes for the welfare work were seen as dominance of the Northerners and a result of their victory over the Confederacy. They still stuck to hold the traditional cultural standard which gave them supremacy over the black slaves.
