The Age of Enlightenment also known as the age of reason took place during the 18th century and it exerciced considerable influenced on many different fields like philosophy, art and literature. Its main characteristic was the use of reason to enlighten from the darkness and ignorance of the past. The enghtenment movement therefore promoted democratic ideals such as progress, toleration and progression and stood in sharp contrast to the absolute monarchy where the monarch had supreme authority.
