The fall of Constantinopole into the hands of the Ottoman Turks in 1459 cut Europe's traditional routes of species trade and other trade with Asia. So, there was a need to find new routes to continue to trade with China and India. That need spurred ocean voyages and European exploration in the 15th and 16th centuries.
