This is the name given to some Southern Democratic politicians prior to the Civil War who were willing to cooperate with the Republican Party if the institution of slavery was protected from elimination.

They were called "Conservative Democrats" and they insisted that slavery was national. Democrats controlled the national government from 1852 until 1860. Presidents Pierce and Buchanan often showed their friendliness to Southern interests.
