The British retaliated with Orders in Council, which imposed a close naval blockade along the entire coast of all countries controlled by or allied to Napoleon. Cut off from non European markets, the economies of everywhere in Europe slumped, and in 1811, uner pressure from his nobles, Alexander I of Russia withdrew from the Continental System.
Napoleon responded by gathering a huge army and invading Russia in 1812 so as to force Alexander back into the Continental System, but was unable to destroy the Russian army. Although he occupied Moscow briefly, Napoleon and hsi army had to retreat during the Russian Winter, and he lost 90% of his army.
The Russians followed up the retreat and, joined by Britain, Austria, Prussia and Sweden in the Sixth Coalition, eventually forced Napoleon out of Germany and then invaded France, which led to the abdication of Napoleon in April 1814.
