More than 850 million tons of topsoil had blown off the southern plains in 1935, nearly 8 tons of dirt for every resident of the United States. Explanation:

More than 850 million tons of topsoil had blown off the southern plains in 1935, nearly 8 tons of dirt for every resident of the United States. In the Dust Bowl, farmers lost 480 tons per acre. For over ten years, severe drought and severs wind erosion haunted the Great Plains, creating horrible dust storms that killed people, animals and plants, while destroying the air quality of the nation. By 1934, it had turned the Great Plains into a desert that came to be known as the Dust Bowl. In Oklahoma, the Panhandle area was hit hardest by the drought. The land of the southern plains, including Oklahoma, was originally covered with grasses that held the fine soil in place. In the Dust Bowl, about 7,000 people, men, women and especially small children lost their lives to "dust pneumonia." At least 250,000 people fled the Plains.
