Florida was not one of the original Thirteen Colonies of Great Britain in North America, but was initially a Spanish colony, administratively belonging to New Spain. Throughout the colonial era there were clashes between British and Spaniards that made Florida change hands and even divide, which made during the American Revolutionary War Florida a loyalist bastion. Finally, Florida was transferred back to Spain as a result of the independence of the United States. In turn, Spain ended up transferring the territory to the United States in 1819.
