    De-Stalinization ocurred as a new head of state, Nikita Khrushchev in 1956 came to power announced a series of political reforms to the country:

    He focused on destroying Stalins undestructible notion of supreme leader, showing the fallible side of his leadership.

    This meant ending the large scale forced labor, including the many Gulags who had political prisioners, also this meant no longer cult for the person of Stalin, and removing the key political institutions that supported his policies.

    Khrushchev set a commission willing to investigate Stalin's activities and of his supportes, secretly done to completely erradicate his influence on the Soviet apparatus.
