During the Cold War, there were many proxy wars and the war in Afghanistan was one of them. The two parties fighting within the country were either supported by the U. S. or Soviet Union. As a result, the U. S. provided weapons to the jihadists against the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan who were supported by the Soviet Union. Later, Muslim extremists got a hold of these weapons and terrorist groups formed.
