The League of Nations established the mandate system in the Middle East after WWI. It was a result of the weakening and disintegration of the Ottoman Empire, one of the losing powers of WWI. Before its end, British and French interests had been putting pressure on the Ottoman territories in the region.

The League created three types of mandates. The A Class corresponded to the former Ottoman territories in the Middle East. In this region, France and Britain received the important mandates.
