The first phase was the New England phase, from April 1775 to Spring 1776. The second phase was the Middle Atlantic phase, from Summer 1776 to the Summer of 1778. The third phase was the Southern phase, from the Winter of 1778 to 1783. The Continental Army defeated the British troop and gained independence from the English colony. The treaty that officially ended the war was the Treaty of Paris of September 1783.
