Two movements marked the history of the end of the 18th century. One was the French Revolution, and the other, the independence of the United States. Both one and the other had their livelihood in the ideas of the Enlightenment. Upon his triumph, the revolutions in France and the United States proclaimed the equality of men before the law and gave citizens broad freedoms; a category that was born precisely with French illuminism. Of course, these ideas were not entirely unknown in the Spanish colonies. It is known, for example, that the priest Miguel Hidalgo was a supporter of the Enlightenment, and that many of those who participated in the Mexican War of Independence knew more or less deeply the ideas of liberalism.
