The hostility of Native American tribes and distance from other Spanish colonies

    Explanation:

Concerned by the aspirations of France, the Spanish authorities sent several missions to East Texas in 1690. Spanish missionaries return to Mexico because of conflict with Native Americans. As France began to settle in Louisiana, mostly in the south, in 1716 the Spanish authorities again sent missions to eastern Texas. After two years, San Antonio, the first Spanish city in Texas, was founded.

The hostility of Native American tribes and distance from other Spanish colonies discouraged colonists from settling in Texas. Consequently, Texas was one of the least populated provinces in New Spain.

When purchasing Louisiana from France in 1803, US authorities insisted that the agreement also cover Texas. The border between New Spain and the United States was established on the Sabin River in 1819.
