Ford's pardoning of Nixon was very unpopular.

The economy was experiencing a recession and inflation and Ford seemed unable to fix the problems.

Ford's opponent, Jimmy Carter, was seen as an honest politician compared to the abuse of power seen in the Nixon administration.
