Of course, the Civil War was fought over the moral issue of slavery. In fact, it was the economics of slavery and political control of that system that was central to the conflict. A key issue was states' rights.

Answer: Yes, The War was fought to free slaves and also to get the Confederates back into the Union. Without the war who nows what the United States would be like right now.
